The Station North Art District was established as the 1st of its kind in 2002. Now, Maryland has 22 designated art districts. Station North consists of Charles North, Greenmount West, and Barclay. Some of its most popular spots include Penn Station, Graffiti Alley, MICA, and the Motor House. In 2023, I spent a lot of time exploring the area collaborating with other student artists. During that time, I learned that it is truly the center of Baltimore’s art scene, housing tons of galleries, studios, and artists.
One of my favorite art initiatives in the Station North Art District has been Open Walls Project. It was a mural and installation initiative that was started by Gaia who is both an artist and leader of the international street art movement. This was done in collaboration with Station North Arts and Entertainment Inc to revitalize and promote the area. During its first installment, 23 artists worked together to produce 29 murals and installations.
The Motor House is a both a performance venue and studio space. It houses a showroom bar, gallery spaces, and art studios. Some of my favorite local artists have a studio space there.
